Wh Question

For framing Wh question we must ascertain that there are two ways of framing Wh question

1) Wh For Subject

2) Wh For Object

If you frame a question for knowing subject,  you should frame interrogative sentence without helping verb/Modal Auxiliary.

Secondly if you frame a question for knowing object, you should frame sentence with helping verb/modal Auxiliary

👉The usage of helping verb is allowed only when we expect sentence Object as its answer

👉 Look at this example

Tree planting became a natural choice.

(Choose the correct Wh question to get the sentence subject as an answer from the given options.)

a) What became a natural choice ?

b)What did become a natural choice?

To form a Wh-question that asks for the subject of a sentence, we follow these grammar rules:

1. Identifying the Subject in the Given Sentence

Sentence: Tree planting became a natural choice.

Subject: Tree planting

Verb: became

Object/Complement: a natural choice

Since we need to frame a question where the answer is the subject ("Tree planting"), we must use the correct Wh-question structure.

2. Rule for Subject Questions (Without Auxiliary "Do/Did")

When asking about the subject, we do not use auxiliary verbs like do, does, or did.

The structure is: Wh-word + main verb + rest of the sentence?

Example:

What caused the accident? (The subject is "What" and directly replaces the noun that caused the accident.)

Who wrote this book? (The subject is "Who", replacing the person who wrote the book.)

Applying this to our sentence:

"What became a natural choice?" (✓ Correct)

The subject Tree planting is replaced by What, and the verb became remains unchanged.

3. Rule for Object Questions (With Auxiliary "Did")

If we ask about the object, we use do/does/did as an auxiliary verb.

Structure: Wh-word + auxiliary verb (do/does/did) + subject + main verb?

Example:

What did you see? (Object question; "you" is the subject.)

Who did she meet? (Object question; "she" is the subject.)

Applying this rule to our sentence:

"What did become a natural choice?" (✗ Incorrect)

In short , Firstly we must decide which answer we want to get - whether subject or Object ? .Definitely we want subject as an answer.

If a subject is expected as an answer of Wh , no use of  helping verb is allowed grammatically.

Final Answer:

✔ "What became a natural choice?" (Correct)

✗ "What did become a natural choice?" (Incorrect).
